The sonnet form had its origin in Italy in the 1200s and has evolved since. The English sonnet originated sometime in the 1500s with William Shakespeare, Sir Thomas Wyatt, and Earl of Surrey. The form has much history for attempting to reveal thoughts on some subjects as in William Shakespeares and Elizabeth Brownings famous lines on endearment. Some recognize the sonnet as the most flexible and common poem of more or less fixed form. The traditional form has been with iambic pentameter but other structures have been used to fit the subject matter or to make a point. These poems were composed primarily for amusement but with some pedagogic and wishful thinking in mind. While realizing that poetry may not have a universal appeal, it seemed appropriate to include illustrations and a narrative supplement to aid in understanding some of the metric intent. Images of the quarter coins from the U.S. Mint were used as illustrations for each state.
